Applications for the 2019 NATO Advisory Board Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship are now closed. If you are interested in discussing this opportunity, please contact Esther Baruh.
The 2019 NATO Advisory Board Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship will be awarded to up to five (5) current employees of NATO member companies to cover travel and lodging expenses for attending the 2019 NATO Advisory Board meeting. The Advisory Board meeting will take place from September 23-24 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, CA. Click here for the full schedule.
Goals and Benefits
The goal of this scholarship is to build a pathway to participation in NATO, both at the committee level and in its leadership, for people who are currently underrepresented among the association’s volunteers, including women; younger executives; minorities; people with disabilities; and people who identify as lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer+. As the Advisory Board is a conduit to recruitment to NATO committees, and membership on the Advisory Board is a requirement for election to the Executive Board, we have identified the Advisory Board meeting as a key opportunity for expanding participation in NATO.
While receiving this scholarship is a one-time only opportunity, ideally, recipients will attend NATO’s Advisory Board meeting again in subsequent years. Companies are strongly encouraged to support and advance applicants who would be able to attend future Advisory Board meetings. NATO is interested in supporting the development of employees who will become active in the association, and we hope for our members to be similarly invested.
As noted above, this is a one-time only scholarship; recipients of 2019 scholarships are not eligible to receive the scholarship in future years.
All scholarship recipients are entitled to full participation in the Advisory Board meeting, including all organized meal events, plus:
- Hotel accommodations for the meeting (a room at the Beverly Hilton, to be booked by NATO for the recipient, for the nights of September 22 and 23)
- Up to $1200 in reimbursement for travel to and from the meeting site and expenses for meals not provided by the meeting schedule
Please note: NATO will cover room charge and taxes. All incidentals and further charges to the room are to be covered by the scholarship recipient. Reimbursement for flight expenses is restricted to flights booked in economy/main cabin classes. Reimbursement is not permitted for flights booked in first class.
Eligibility
Employees of NATO member companies who did not attend the Advisory Board meeting in 2017 or 2018 are eligible to apply. Employees from the general manager level and up are eligible to apply, at the discretion of their employers.
Applicants must possess a minimum of two years of experience with their company.
This scholarship is available to applicants who are underrepresented among the NATO volunteer base and meet any or all of the following criteria: Applicants who identify as female; applicants who are 39 and younger; applicants who identify as members of racial or ethnic minority groups; applicants who identify as lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer+; or applicants who identify as a person with a disability.
Commitments
Scholarship recipients are expected to attend various events at the Advisory Board meeting:
- A special orientation breakfast on September 23
- A minimum of three (3) committee meetings over September 23 and 24, in addition to the Diversity and Inclusion Committee meeting on September 24
- All organized meal events
- The Advisory Board meeting on September 24
The Advisory Board schedule can be found here.
Scholarship recipients will be paired with a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee for a post-meeting debrief and feedback conversation.
After the Advisory Board meeting, scholarship recipients will be expected to join at least one of NATO’s committees that are open to all members or open to members meeting certain criteria: Codes Task Force; Independent Theatre Owners Committee (for NATO members operating 1-74 screens); International Committee; Movie Theft Task Force; Ratings Compliance Officers; Technology Committee; and the Young Members Committee (for NATO members age 35 and under).
Companies are strongly encouraged to send scholarship recipients to future Advisory Board meetings and to support and advance applicants who would be eligible for same.
