ASC & DCI Create Testing
Material
LOS ANGELES – The American Society of Cinematographers
(ASC) and the Digital Cinema Initiatives consortium (DCI)
have established standardized testing material for evaluating
the performance of digital projectors and other d-cinema
systems.
Cinematographers Ron Garcia, Dante Spinotti,
Daryn Okada and ASC Technology Committee chairman Curtis
Clark designed
the test scene, described as a wedding taking place in
a 1950s Italian village containing various challenging
situations and powerful emotional content. Filmed in the “European
Village” on the Universal Studios backlot, the shoot
involved multiple cameras in super-35 and anamorphic formats,
with selected 65mm shots.
ASC and DCI plan to select appropriate short
scenes from nearly two hours of footage, which will later
be scanned
and converted to digital files. These files will be used
to master the standard materials designed to test the performance
of digital projectors.
The project follows ASC’s initiative, established
in May to help form standards and practices within the
digital filmmaking world (In Focus, August
2003).
