Cinemark Marches 19
Into Sherman, Asheboro

PLANO, Texas – Cinemark USA announced in July it is planning spring 2003 openings for two new facilities: a Sherman, Texas, 12-plex and a 7-plex at Asheboro, N.C.’s Randolph Mall.

The 12-plex, expected to be Sherman’s largest multi when completed, will be located at the 50,000-square-foot Sherman Town Center retail complex.

The all-new Asheboro 7-plex will replace the 5-plex Cinemark currently operates at the mall, and will be nearly double the 5-plex’s size.

The two multis will share a number of attributes, including art-deco design emphasizing reds and golds, stadium-style seating (with 48-inch rows and a 16-inch height difference between rows) and online ticketing at www.cinemark.com.

Cinemark currently operates 3,104 screens at 278 sites worldwide.

Illinois NATO Picks
Scholarship Recipients

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – NATO of Illinois announced Sept. 5 that it had awarded a total of $2,000 in college scholarships to theatre employees demonstrating “exemplary scholastic achievement, work ethic and leadership qualities.”

Value Theatres’ Sylvia Ligeza, a student at the University of Illinois, received a $1,000 scholarship. Five-hundred-dollar scholarships were awarded to Classic Cinemas’ Fred Uebele, who attends Philadelphia University, and Value Theatres’ Andrew Behrendt, enrolled at Grinnell College.

This is the third year of the association’s scholarship program.

 

California/Nevada NATO
$50,000 Awarded To
Cinema Employees

LOS ANGELES – NATO of California/ Nevada announced in September the winners of its 2002 NATO $50,000 annual scholarship program.

The recipients, who were selected based on promotion to management positions and response to an essay question, will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship.

“It is very gratifying to the association to be able to support these bright, young men and women, as they prepare for their futures and that of our country,” said Milt Moritz, president and CEO of NATO California/Nevada.

California/Nevada NATO scholarship recipients are:

  • Brian M. Beard, Century Theatre Rancho Santa Fe, Las Vegas;

ShowEast Honors
Cinemark’s Lundin

NEW YORK – Cinemark USA head film buyer John Lundin will be honored with the Al Shapiro Distinguished Service Award at ShowEast’s Oct. 12 closing awards gala, it was announced by organizers on Aug. 6.

Prior to joining Cinemark, Lundin, a 30-year industry vet, held positions at Cannon Pictures, Litchfield Theaters, United Artists Theatres, Columbia, MGM/UA and Buena Vista.

ShowEast’s distinguished service award each year honors an individual who has bettered the motion picture industry.
