Michigan Multi Bows in Fall
Celebration! Brings 16
To Grand Rapids Area
 GAINES
TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Celebration! Cinema, in conjunction
with C.D. Barnes Associates and Post Associates, announced
in late December plans to bow a 2,500-seat 16-plex in
Gaines Township by fall of 2005.
Construction on the site, located at Kalamazoo
Avenue and M-6, was slated to begin in January.
“We are incredibly excited that we
have the ability to partner with Celebration! Cinema
and Post Associates
for yet another outstanding entertainment cinema complex
in Gaines Township,” stated Todd Osting, vice president
of C.D. Barnes Associates.

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Consolidated Theatres on Jan.
12 opened its Mayfaire 16-plex in Wilmington, N.C.
The multi, complete with wall-to-wall screens, stadium-style
seating and digital sound, features an expanded gourmet
concessions stand offering Uno Chicago Grill pizza,
Rico’s nachos and Icee frozen beverages. Amenities
include an indoor ATM and guest services area.
Wilmington’s EUE Screen Gem Studios, the largest
motion picture production facility outside California,
and its president, Frank Capra Jr., were honored at
the 16-plex on Jan. 20. EUE Screen Gem has facilitated
hundreds of productions, including the WB network dramas “Dawson’s
Creek” and “One Tree Hill.”
Charlotte, N.C.-based Consolidated currently operates
302 screens at 22 sites in five states.
February Grand Opening
GTC To Bow 10 In Southwest Georgia
 DAWSON, Ga. – Georgia Theatre Company on Feb.
4 opened its new 10-plex in Dawson, Ga., about 20 miles
northwest of Albany and 60 miles southeast of Columbus.
Designed so it may one day expand to 16 screens, the
cinema offers auditoria equipped with stadium-style
seating, wide-arc screens and high-backed chairs with
retractable cupholder armrests.
“
This theatre brings facilities equal to any in the
state of Georgia to the Greater Dawson area,” said
circuit president Bill Stembler. “We are proud
to offer the very latest in movie theatre technology
and innovations to make the movie-going experience
more comfortable and exciting than ever before. Our
company is excited about becoming a part of the Dawson
community and surrounding areas.”
St. Simons Island, Ga.-based GTC, one of the 16 largest
cinema companies in the United States, currently operates
267 screens at 28 sites in Georgia, South Carolina
and Virginia. c

Former Capitol Hill Counsel Serves

Affairs Director
Macdowell Named NATO
 General Counsel
WASHINGTON,
D.C. – Former Capitol Hill counsel G. Kendrick
Macdowell has joined NATO as its general counsel and
director of government affairs, the association announced
Jan. 13.
He most recently served as the general counsel to the
U.S. Senate Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Financial
Management, the Budget and International Security chaired
by former senator Peter Fitzgerald (R-Ill.), who recently
retired. In addition to his committee work, Macdowell
served as Fitzgerald’s legislative counsel for
judiciary issues.
Macdowell will provide legal advice to NATO, its staff
and members, and will oversee the government affairs
program of the association. Key substantive areas of
focus will include the industry’s transition to
digital technologies as well as the effort to combat
movie piracy.
“We are thrilled that someone with Mr. Macdowell’s
extensive experience and legal acumen has joined the
executive team at our trade association,” stated
NATO president John Fithian. “The movie theatre
industry currently confronts many challenges and opportunities,
and Kendrick will help guide us toward the future.”
Prior to his public service on Capitol Hill, Macdowell
was a partner at the Washington, D.C. law firm of Patton
Boggs LLP, where he worked as a litigator and appellate
advocate, integrating litigation strategy with broad-based
policy initiatives in regulatory and legislative forums.
At Patton Boggs, he also developed constitutional and
political analysis for legislative clients. Prior to
joining Patton Boggs, Macdowell clerked for judge Thomas
M. Reavley of the Fifth Circuit United States Court
of Appeals in Austin, Texas. He holds doctor of jurisprudence,
master, and bachelor of arts degrees from the University
of Texas. c
5-Plex For Minnesota
Brainerd Multi
Due Spring ‘05
BRAINERD, Minn. – Nor-son Inc. announced in November
plans to begin construction on a 5-plex in the Central
Minnesota town of Jenkins, about 25 miles north of Brainerd
and 120 miles west of Duluth.
The Sunset Cinema complex will boast two 165-seat auditoria
and three 85-seat auditoria.
The 12,000-square-foot facility was set to feature
stadium-style seating, and the interior plans called
for tongue-and-groove
wood ceilings and log accents designed to reflect the
cinema’s rustic setting.
“We believe it’s going to be a good spot. We’ve
been driving back and forth to Brainerd to do all our
entertainment for so long we just figured it was time
to give it a try,” stated Clayton and Sandy Sundvall,
the owners behind the project. |
